Course typesetting and letterpress

Thursday from 17.00-20.00

every week outside of school holidays.

Setting and printing with movable letters is an inspiring manual design process. With a creative introductory work, all steps of the process are explained and practiced. Afterwards, own typographic ideas can be implemented in a contemporary way.

Objectives:
-Security in the professional handling of materials and printing presses
-understanding of typographic proportions and printed matter
-realization of own projects like maps, posters, books etc.

Content:
Lead typesetting: the typographical measurement system, the handling of fonts (drawers, running text, pluggable fonts, poster type), basics of text design (line width, spacing, font size, fonts), general order and filing system in the standing type shelf.

Letterpress: 

Choice of the printing press (which is suitable for what), handling of the take-off, platen and flatbed press, handling of clamping elements and closing materials, setting up the block form and adjusting the appropriate contact pressure, preparing and loading the printing ink, changing the machine packing (rubber blanket or calibration paper), production run printing, cleaning and care of the presses and ink rollers.


Further processing: paper selection, running direction, cutting (cardboard shears, pile cutter), folding and creasing with the creasing device, various bindings.
